Coating the garage floor: 1K floor paint or 2K epoxy?
Unsure whether your garage floor needs 1K floor paint or a 2K epoxy coating? This guide compares expected wear, substrate, primer, drying and slip resistance so you can choose the right system before you start.

In brief
A garage floor may look straightforward: concrete, a few stains, perhaps a crack, then a coat of paint. In practice, it is one of the more demanding floors in a property. Tyres, oil, moisture, road salt, tools, bicycles, shelving and temperature changes all affect a surface that may have been untreated for years.
Colour is not the only question. Consider how heavily the floor will be used, the condition of the concrete and the required service life.
For lighter use, a 1K floor paint may be sufficient. For heavily used garages, workshops and warehouses, 2K epoxy usually makes more sense.
When 1K floor paint is enough
1K floor paint is ready to use. It does not need to be mixed with hardener and is therefore easier to process. This is practical if the floor is used normally and is not exposed to extreme mechanical or chemical stress.
Water-based floor paint is suitable for concrete, screed, cement, plaster, stone, wood, metal and similar surfaces. It is a water-based acrylic floor coating for normal to medium-loaded floors. Typical areas are basements, laundry rooms, simple workshop areas or renovations in utility rooms.
One-part floor paint may suit a lightly used garage with little vehicle traffic, no heavy oil contamination and where the main aim is a cleaner finish. For daily vehicle use, tyre residue or regular dirt and moisture, assess the limitations carefully.
The product information says it clearly: For heavily trafficked floors or garages, a 2K epoxy coating is the more robust choice.
When 2K epoxy is better
Two-part epoxy consists of a resin coating and hardener. It requires more care during application but forms a more durable surface. This matters in garages because tyres and concentrated loads place greater demands on the floor than normal foot traffic.
2K epoxy floor coating for garage and workshop is intended for garages, basements, workshops, storage rooms, industrial halls, balconies and terraces. It adheres to concrete, cement, screed, wood and metal if the surface is prepared. The surface is satin-gloss, abrasion-resistant, chemical-resistant and hard-wearing.
If a matt surface is desired, 2K epoxy floor coating matt is an option. It is designed for garages, workshops, basements, warehouses, indoor areas and covered terraces and is suitable for concrete, wood and screed floors.
A two-part system is not always necessary, but it is often the more realistic choice for a working garage.
Assess the load correctly
A floor with little foot traffic does not need a garage-grade system. A floor beneath a parked car is subject to sustained concentrated loads, tyre heat, moisture, dirt and sometimes chemicals, as well as winter road salt and traces of oil or fuel.
Before deciding, check:
- Will a car remain parked on the floor?
- Is there moisture and road salt in the winter?
- Is there oil, brake cleaner, fuel or other chemicals?
- Do jacks, tool trolleys or heavy shelves roll across the surface?
- Should the floor be as easy to clean as possible?
- Are slip resistance or colour flakes planned?
The more often the answer is yes, the stronger the case for a two-part coating.
The surface is more important than the choice of product
A good garage floor coating starts with the existing concrete. The substrate must be clean, dry, sound and free from grease. Loose existing coatings, oil, dust, friable screed and moisture impair adhesion.

If you save at this point, you are saving in the wrong place. An expensive coating on an unsuitable surface remains a risky structure.
Primer in the garage
Garage floors are often absorbent, sandy or stained. A suitable primer can improve adhesion and balance absorbency.
2K epoxy primer is suitable for concrete, screed, cement-based substrates, mastic asphalt and old paint. It serves as a deep consolidation and adhesion promoter in front of 2K floor systems. On smooth or mineral surfaces, Special adhesive primer can be useful as a bonding bridge before floor paint and epoxy.
The decision depends on the surface. A new, very smooth concrete needs different preparation than an old, porous or absorbent garage floor with dust and stains.
Processing: 1K is easier, 2K requires planning
1K floor paint is stirred well and applied before use. This makes processing more relaxed. With 2K epoxy, the colour and hardener must be mixed in a ratio of 10:1 by weight. The processing time then begins. Tools, edge areas and amount of material should be ready before mixing.
Two coats are recommended for the CAIRCON 2K garage coating. Consumption is around 200 to 300 g/m² per coat. Depending on the surface, more material may be necessary.
Suitable tools are helpful for larger areas. Floor coating tool set supports the distribution, ventilation and walking on fresh coatings. Large area squeegee 560 mm can help distribute evenly on floor surfaces.
Curing before vehicle use
Walkable does not mean passable. This is particularly important in garages. 2K epoxy can be walked on after approx. 24 hours, but only reaches full hardening and chemical resistance after several days. Depending on the product, the CAIRCON 2K systems take around 7 to 9 days to fully cure.
If you drive your car onto the surface too early, you risk leaving marks, dull spots, shifting or grip problems. Tires can also introduce plasticizers and heat. So plan the garage so that it does not have to be fully loaded for several days.
Slip resistance and paint chips
A smooth garage coating is easy to clean, but can become slippery when wet. For more grip, Anti-slip glass beads are suitable, which can be sprinkled or mixed into the wet coating. For R9 to R10, approx. 50 to 60 g/m² is recommended, for a light structure approx. 20 to 30 g/m².
Colour chips are primarily decorative. They can conceal small visual defects and support slip resistance. If slip resistance is the main reason, glass beads should be specifically planned.
Which solution is right?
Water-based floor paint can be sufficient for a lightly used area. For a real garage floor with a vehicle, workshop use or higher load, 2K epoxy floor coating for garage and workshop is the better direction. If you want the surface to be matte, check 2K epoxy floor coating matt.
2K epoxy floor coating for balconies, terraces and concrete should be considered for outdoor use, a balcony, terrace or more exposed to the weather.
