Open-pored does not automatically mean unprotected

Whether the pores can remain open depends on the area of application. A dry living area, a terrace, a balcony, a shower or a pool surround have different requirements.

What does a pore filler do?

A pore filler closes more of the porous structure. According to the product information, Exterior stone carpet pore filler is a transparent two-part epoxy pore filler for stone carpet and porous pebble coatings. It penetrates the pores, forms a clear protective barrier and is suitable for outdoor areas, terraces, balconies, pool surrounds, stairs, showers and wet areas.

Important: Consumption can be significant. For the external pore filler, the product information states approx. 2-3 kg/m² for a stone size of 2-5 mm, depending on the stone carpet height and grain size. This should be included in the cost planning.

What does a sealant do?

A sealant is a final protective layer on an already laid, hardened and dry stone carpet surface. Stone carpet sealing outside is a colourless epoxy-based finishing seal for existing natural stone carpet surfaces. It closes fine pores, forms a closed surface and protects the outside from water, frost, dirt and UV influences.

For indoor areas there is Stone carpet sealing inside. According to the product information, it is intended for natural stone carpets installed indoors, for example on stairs, bathroom and shower floors, living and office areas as well as indoor industrial and commercial areas.

Outside: think about UV, water and frost

Outdoor surfaces are more demanding. The surface gets wet, dries again, is in the sun and has to withstand temperature fluctuations. If an area needs to be closed and better protected against water, frost, dirt and UV exposure, the logic of external sealing fits.

A sealer does not solve every substrate problem. If the balcony lacks effective waterproofing or water cannot drain, a protective topcoat alone will not fix it. Drainage and the substrate build-up remain important.

Indoor and wet areas

In the bathroom, shower, kitchen or living area it is often about cleaning and suitability for everyday use. An open-pored surface can be visually attractive, but absorbs dirt and moisture differently than a more closed surface. A decision should be made early on whether the surface should be closed.
