In brief: prepare before mixing

The working time starts as soon as the resin and hardener are mixed. Prepare the area, tools, edges, material quantities and access route beforehand, and arrange a second person if the job requires one.

This guide describes the process for coloured 2K epoxy floor coatings on garages, workshops, basements, balconies, terraces or concrete. The specific product information remains relevant, but the working logic is almost always the same: prepare, mix, apply, ventilate, let dry, plan the second coat.

Before mixing: get everything ready

Before you mix the components, the surface should be prepared. It must be clean, dry, sound, grease-free and primed if the structure requires a primer. Repairs must be solid. Dust must no longer remain on the surface.

Have ready:

  • Coating and hardener.
  • Scale or suitable measuring option for the mixing ratio.
  • Mixer and clean bucket.
  • Roller, brush or squeegee.
  • Spiked roller, if required.
  • Nail shoes if you have to walk on the fresh surface.
  • Adhesive tape and material for edges.
  • Glass beads or paint chips if planned.

Floor coating tool set bundles typical tools such as rake, deaeration roller, nail shoes and telescopic handle. For large floor areas, Large area squeegee 560 mm can help with even distribution.

Take the mixing ratio seriously

For the coloured CAIRCON 2K floor coatings for garages, workshops, balconies, terraces and indoor areas, the mixing ratio is 10:1 by weight. This means: resin and hardener must be mixed exactly as specified. More hardener does not automatically make the surface hard faster or better. Too little hardener can cause the coating to remain sticky or not cure properly.

2K epoxy primer, on the other hand, has a different mixing ratio, namely 2:1. Transparent seals also work at 2:1. Therefore, you should not draw conclusions from one product to the other.

This distinction matters and is a common source of errors with two-part products.

Mix properly

Mix the resin and hardener thoroughly, including the sides and bottom of the bucket. A quick twist with the whisk isn't always enough. Unmixed leftovers can form soft or sticky spots later.

For larger areas, work in manageable batches. Mixing one large batch may seem quicker, but the material can exceed its working time before it is applied. Higher temperatures accelerate the reaction. Lower temperatures slow it down but can also impair application and curing.

Pot life: do not use it until the last minute

Pot life is the period during which the mixed material remains usable. The Two-part epoxy primer has a working time of approximately 20 to 30 minutes at 20 °C. For coloured coatings, follow the information for the specific product.

What is important is that pot life is not a comfortable working time until the last drop. Material that is already noticeably tougher, flows more poorly or reacts warmly in the bucket no longer belongs on the floor. It is harder to spread and can lead to visible marks.

Apply first coat

Depending on the product, the coating is applied with a roller, brush, squeegee or sprayer. For garages and workshops, 2K epoxy floor coating for garage and workshop recommends applying with a roller or brush. The matt version can be applied with a brush, roller or sprayer. The balcony and terrace product is applied in two coats.

Work from the back area toward the exit. Edges, corners and connections should not be forgotten until the end. If a squeegee is used, you can then use a roller to close the area more evenly.

Don't intentionally apply too thickly to save a coat. Layers that are too thick can take longer to harden, promote bubbles or become visually unsettled.

Deaeration, colour flakes and glass beads

For certain setups, a deaeration roller can help remove air bubbles from the fresh coating. This is particularly relevant if the substrate has pores or material has been drawn up more heavily.

If Colour chips are planned, they are sprinkled evenly into the still wet coating. The dosage determines the appearance: approx. 50 g/m² for a light effect, approx. 100 g/m² for greater dispersion, approx. 200 g/m² for dense design and even more for full dispersion.

Anti-slip glass beads can be mixed directly into 1K or 2K floor paint or sprinkled into the wet coating. For R9 to R10, approx. 50 to 60 g/m² is recommended, for a light structure approx. 20 to 30 g/m².

Chips and glass beads do not have the same job. Chips are, above all, decorative. Glass beads are the more targeted anti-slip solution.

Second coat and recoating time

At least two coats are recommended for CAIRCON 2K floor coatings. This improves coverage, surface and protection. Depending on the product, the coating can be painted over after at least 12 hours. The matt 2K floor coating can be painted over after at least 12 hours and can be walked on after approx. 24 hours. The balcony and terrace product can also be painted over after at least 12 hours and walked on after 24 hours.

Follow the stated recoating time rather than estimating it. If the first coat is still too soft or tacky, it is not ready. If the recommended window has passed, the surface may need sanding, depending on the product. Follow the instructions for the specific product.

Drying and full curing

Epoxy resin hardens chemically. The surface may feel firm after a day, but is not yet fully resilient. For the balcony and terrace product, full curing and chemical resistance is stated after 7 to 9 days. The UV-resistant transparent floor sealant is dust-dry after 1 to 2 hours, can be walked on after 24 hours and is fully resilient after 7 to 9 days.

In a garage, readiness for foot traffic does not mean readiness for a parked vehicle. In a workshop or warehouse, light use does not mean the floor is ready for heavy machinery, chemicals or trolleys.

Why does epoxy stay sticky?

Sticky spots often arise from one of these problems:

  • Incorrect mixing ratio.
  • Too short or mixed unevenly.
  • Temperature too low.
  • Humidity too high.
  • Applied too thickly.
  • Material processed after the pot life has expired.
  • The substrate was contaminated.

Stickiness cannot be solved simply by waiting if the resin and hardener are mixed incorrectly. Then the condition must be checked carefully. In the case of fresh, soft areas the cause may be different than in the case of material that has not hardened over a large area.

Why do bubbles form?

Bubbles can come from the substrate when pores release air. They can also be caused by incorrect tools, layers that are too thick, processing too quickly, temperature differences or a lack of primer. Highly absorbent surfaces should not be coated without testing.

A suitable primer can close pores and even out absorbency. With concrete and screed, this is often more important than another coat of paint.

Processing temperature

The CAIRCON 2K balcony and terrace coating is ideally processed at +15 °C to +25 °C and 40 to 60% humidity. The matt floor coating can be painted over after at least 12 hours and can be walked on after approx. 24 hours. The UV-resistant seal is processed at +15 °C to +25 °C and a maximum of 70% humidity.

Too cold, too warm or too humid is not a small detail. It changes flow, pot life, curing and surface.

Frequently asked questions

How do you mix 2K floor coating correctly?

Resin and hardener are mixed in the specified ratio by weight. For the coloured CAIRCON 2K floor coatings it is 10:1. Then mix thoroughly and apply within the processing time.

How many coats does 2K floor coating need?

At least two coats are recommended for CAIRCON 2K floor coatings. This improves coverage and protection.

When can 2K floor coating be walked on?

Many CAIRCON 2K floor coatings can be walked on after approx. 24 hours. Depending on the product, full curing takes several days.

Why doesn't epoxy harden?

Common causes are incorrect mixing ratio, mixing for too short a time, unsuitable temperature, excessive humidity or processing after the pot life has expired.

Which tools do you need?

Depending on the surface, roller, brush, squeegee, stirrer, deaeration roller and nail shoes. For larger projects, a floor coating tool set can be useful.

Plan your floor coating with suitable two-part coatings, primer, anti-slip additives and sealer.
