In brief: the tin price is not the price per square metre

Anyone looking for epoxy floor costs per m² usually wants a quick figure. A reliable flat rate is rarely possible because the coloured coating is only one part of the cost. The substrate, primer, repairs, number of coats, sealer, slip-resistant additive, tools and material waste must also be included.

The useful question is not simply how much a litre costs, but which system build-up the area requires.

The main costs at a glance

For a realistic calculation you should consider these items:

  • Cleaning and degreasing.
  • Surface preparation, for example etching or grinding.
  • Repair of cracks, holes and chips.
  • Primer.
  • Coloured 2K floor coating.
  • Second coat.
  • Optional colour flakes or glass beads.
  • Optional transparent seal.
  • Tools, adhesive tape, bucket, mixer and protective material.
  • Contingency for a rough substrate, edges and waste.

Many estimates allow too little because they include only the coloured coating. The material then runs short, opacity is poorer than expected, there is not enough for the second coat or the primer is omitted to reduce the cost.

Consumption of coloured coating

2K epoxy floor coating for garage and workshop has a consumption of approx. 200 to 300 g/m² per coat. Two coats are recommended.

2K epoxy floor coating matt is also around 200 to 300 g/m² per coat and is recommended in at least two coats.

2K epoxy floor coating for balconies, terraces and concrete has an approximate consumption of 250 g/m² per coat. This product also requires two coats.

For an initial material estimate, multiply the area in m² by the consumption per coat and the number of coats. Then add an allowance for the substrate, edges and waste.

Example calculation logic without a price promise

Take a 25 m² garage. For this example, use 250 g/m² as the midpoint of the stated garage-coating consumption of approximately 200 to 300 g/m² per coat. With two coats, the calculation is:

25 m² x 250 g = 6,250 g per coat. For two coats, that is 12,500 g of coating.

Actual consumption may vary with the product, substrate and system build-up, so the figures on the relevant product page remain authoritative. For 25 m², the stated garage-coating range equates to approximately 5,000 to 7,500 g per coat, or 10,000 to 15,000 g for two coats.

That's just the coating. Primer, repair mortar, degreaser, glass beads, paint chips, sealant and tools are not included. A rough, absorbent or damaged surface can also increase the need.

Allowing too little rarely saves money. It increases the risk of running out midway through the floor or applying the second coat too thinly.

Include primer

Priming is a separate cost item. 2K epoxy primer has a consumption of approx. 200 to 300 g/m² per coat. It is suitable for concrete, screed, cement-based and mineral substrates, mastic asphalt and old paint.

Special adhesive primer can be used before floor paint, epoxy and floor coating on concrete, screed, tiles and mineral substrates. If necessary, it can be applied in two coats and dries at 20 °C and 65% relative humidity for approx. 12 hours.

Whether and which primer is needed depends on the surface. In a serious calculation it is not deleted across the board.

Substrate repair and cleaning

An old garage often needs more preparation than expected. Oil, grease, cracks, chips, old paint and dusty concrete cause additional costs.

Universal degreaser cleaner helps remove grease, oil and dirt. Concrete etching solution for floor preparation covers approximately 5 to 8 m² per litre and can prepare smooth or difficult concrete and screed substrates. Two-part repair mortar is used for holes, cracks and spalled areas. Consumption is approximately 2 kg/m², depending on layer thickness.

These items look minor in the shopping cart, but they affect adhesion and durability.

Plan for sealing

A transparent seal is not mandatory in every project. However, it can be useful if you want to protect paint chips, make cleaning easier or if you want a clear, shiny protective layer.

2K epoxy floor sealing transparent is intended for indoor areas. It has a mixing ratio of 2:1 and a consumption of approx. 250 g/m² per coat.

For UV-exposed indoor and outdoor areas, 2K epoxy floor sealant, transparent, UV-resistant is the right direction. Here too, consumption is around 250 g/m² per coat.

If you broadcast paint chips over the entire surface, plan the sealing before purchase.

Anti-slip protection and decoration

Anti-slip glass beads are dosed depending on the desired structure. For R9 to R10, approx. 50 to 60 g/m² is recommended, for a light structure approx. 20 to 30 g/m².

Colour chips are dosed according to the desired look: approx. 50 g/m² for a light effect, approx. 100 g/m² for stronger scattering, approx. 200 g/m² for dense design and approx. 300 g/m² for very dense scattering.

Both are additional costs. But they shouldn't just be viewed as decor. Slip resistance, cleaning, appearance and sealing are related.

Tool costs

For small areas, a roller, brush, mixing container and stirrer are sometimes sufficient. For garages, workshops and larger floor areas, special tools often make more sense.

Floor coating tool set contains tools for distributing, venting and walking on fresh coatings. Large area squeegee 560 mm supports pulling and smoothing leveling compound, epoxy, epoxy paint and primer on floor surfaces.

Tools are an additional cost, but they can determine whether the coating is applied evenly.

Why the specified amount is sometimes not enough

Consumption values are guidelines. In practice you need more material if:

  • the floor is highly absorbent.
  • the surface is rough or porous.
  • There are many edges, corners and connections.
  • Cracks and breakouts can be leveled out.
  • the colour needs high coverage.
  • Untrained processing creates more loss.
  • the roller or squeegee retains material.

A contingency is a practical part of the estimate. With two-part products, running out midway through the floor is particularly disruptive because it can create visible joints and problems with application windows.

DIY or specialist company?

DIY can work if the area is manageable, the surface is good and you work carefully. A specialist company makes more sense if moisture, major damage, large areas, old coatings, external sealing or high loads are involved.

The cost issue is then not just material versus wages. A mistake during construction can later become more expensive than the help saved.
