In brief

Many people search for "DIY stone carpet" or "how to lay stone carpet". The process looks simple at first: mix marble aggregate with binder, spread it and smooth it. In practice, the preparation determines the result.

This guide shows what you should pay attention to before processing. It does not replace technical product instructions, but it does help you decide whether your project is suitable for the area, the substrate and the CAIRCON system.

Step 1: identify the surface and system

Before processing, it must be clear what type of area is present. A horizontal patio is not the same as a vertical wall surface. An outdoor staircase consists of treads, risers and edges. A balcony has different requirements than a dry interior.

For horizontal exterior surfaces, Stone carpet outdoor set is the appropriate option. According to the product information, it is designed for terraces, balconies, pool surrounds, paths, driveways, garden areas and outdoor stairs on screed, concrete, tiles and mastic asphalt. Depending on the project, Stone carpet set with marble gravel and 2K epoxy can be used for horizontal interior and exterior surfaces. Stone carpet set vertical for walls and stairs is the more targeted option for walls, stairs, bases, columns and facade areas.

Step 2: check the substrate

The substrate must be clean, dry and sound. Loose layers, dust, grease, moisture or unstable old coverings can weaken adhesion.

Substrate check

Concrete

Classification for planningMentioned as a suitable surface in several CAIRCON stone carpet products. Must be clean, dry and stable.

Screed

Classification for planningSuitable if stable and prepared. Pay attention to absorbency; priming can be important.

Tiles

Classification for planningMentioned in the product information as a suitable surface. Tiles must be firmly bonded, clean and stable.

Mastic asphalt

Classification for planningMentioned for the outdoor set and outdoor binder. Relevant for horizontal external surfaces.

Natural stone

Classification for planningMentioned for the general set and the vertical set. Check surface and load capacity.

Wooden surfaces

Classification for planningMentioned for the general horizontal set. Do not generalise this to every outdoor project.

Steel

Classification for planningMentioned for Stone carpet primer as a suitable surface. Do not generalise automatically to every set.

Plaster

Classification for planningMentioned for the vertical set, especially for wall, base and facade areas.

Gravel, earth, bitumen membrane

Classification for planningDo not derive these from the CAIRCON product information as safe standard substrates. Do not promise general suitability here.

Step 3: allow for primer

Primer is not a decorative extra. It prepares the connection between the subsurface and the stone carpet system. According to the product information, Stone carpet primer is an adhesion promoter for concrete, screed, tiles and steel. It improves adhesion and, on absorbent substrates, can prevent binder from being absorbed too strongly into the substrate.

The primer is applied evenly with a roller, brush or squeegee. Depending on the surface, consumption is approx. 300 g/m² or approx. 1 L for 5 m² per application. Processing should take place at +15 °C to +25 °C and a maximum of 70% humidity.

Step 4: mix the marble aggregate and binder correctly

The binding agent holds the stones together. Too little binding agent or incorrect mixing can lead to loose stones, weak surfaces or uneven results.

According to the product information, 2K binder for stone carpets with UV protection is used in a ratio of 25 kg of stones to 1.5 kg of binder. Components A and B are mixed at a maximum of 450 rpm for 2-3 minutes, then the stones are added. The material should be processed within 60-90 minutes and applied with a layer thickness of 6 mm.

A different logic applies to the vertical set. With Stone carpet set vertical for walls and stairs, the substrate is primed, the binder is applied thinly as an adhesive bridge and allowed to dry for 10-15 minutes. The marble gravel is then mixed with the remaining binder for 2-3 minutes at a maximum of 450 rpm and applied from bottom to top with a smoothing trowel.

Step 5: Apply and smooth

When applying, it's important to work evenly. The mixture should not stand for too long, should not be processed at an unsuitable temperature and should not be placed on an unsuitable surface. Outside, the area must be protected from moisture, cold, dirt and foot traffic in the early phase.

According to the product information, Stone carpet outdoor set is only laid on horizontal surfaces and is processed at +15 °C to +25 °C and a maximum of 70% humidity. The surface is dust dry after approx. 1-2 hours. This information does not replace the specific product instructions, but provides a safe framework for the blog text.

Step 6: Plan pore filler or sealant

After laying, the question arises as to whether the surface should remain open-pored or be more closed. This depends on usage, cleaning, moisture exposure and the desired surface.

Stone carpet pore filler outside is a 2K epoxy pore sealer for existing stone carpet and pebble coating surfaces. It is used to provide the open pore structure with a clear filling and protective layer. Stone carpet sealing outside, on the other hand, is a colourless final sealant for stone carpet surfaces that have already been laid, hardened and dry.

Common DIY installation mistakes

Most errors occur before the actual smoothing:

  • using a substrate that is dirty or unsound;
  • omitting or choosing the wrong primer;
  • using the wrong system for a horizontal or vertical surface;
  • allowing too little binder;
  • applying the system at too low a temperature, in excessive humidity or when rain is likely;
  • failing to allow for pore filler or sealer.

Frequently asked questions

Can you lay stone carpet yourself?

Yes, if the project, substrate and system are suitable and the product instructions are followed exactly. Careful planning is particularly important for balconies, stairs, outdoor areas or wet areas.

Which surfaces are suitable?

Depending on the product, concrete, screed, tiles, mastic asphalt, natural stone, wooden substrates, plaster or steel are mentioned. Not every surface applies to every system. The product information matters.

Why is primer important?

Primer improves adhesion and can prevent the substrate from absorbing too much binder. This supports stability and even structure.

When should the surface be sealed?

A sealant is not mixed into the fresh mass, but rather applied as a protective layer to an existing, laid, hardened and dry stone carpet surface.

What is different about vertical surfaces?

Vertical surfaces need a system designed for them. Stone carpet set vertical for walls and stairs contains 1K PU binder and primer and is processed differently than a normal horizontal floor set.

Plan your stone carpet project with suitable kits, primer, binder, pore filler and sealer.
